A historic split is currently breaking out in the National Assembly of the Lao PDR after thirty six years under a one-party dictatroial communist regime.
Dr. Khampheuy Panmalaythong, Member of the National Assembly, Secretary of the Party as well as Member of the Central Committee, voiced his views courageous at the meeting of the National Assembly on June 16, 2001 that the current system of government based on the ideology of Lenin should be ended and that the people should be allowed to have democracy. Following Dr. Khampheui, several Assembly Members bravely commented on the mistakes of the Government under the Party. • Based on reports of the Revolutionary Champa Movement on June 26, 2011, since the comments of Dr. Khampheui, the Members of the National Assembly have divided into two factions: about half representing the pro-democracy opposition side with Dr. Khampheui’s pronouncements; the other half are holding on to the old communist line. At this point, Lao people in the Laos are increasingly emboldened to voice their opinions and to speak out against the dictatorial regime, notably in public forums such as coffee shops everywhere
